Shahid was born to actor Pankaj Kapoor (Karamchand) fame and actress/classical dancer Neelima Azeem.

His parents divorced when he was three and he usually lived with his mother. His step-mother is Supriya Pathak. Shahid Kapoor has a little brother and sister called Ruhan and Sanaa. He's also the step brother of Ishaan Kapoor who he starred with in the film "Vaah! Life Ho To Aisi".

Shahid, who is currently filming for Yash Raj Film productions', Anurag Singh's next with Rani Mukerji, is all set to feature in Priyadarshan's next alongside Rani Mukerji. The thriller comedy will show Shahid's character who double crosses everyone, including his grilfriend, played by Rani. The filming is said to begin next year but Priyadarshan is mum on his project.
